Obituary for Agnes A. Kelly
Agnes Fontaine Kelly, 90, previously of Taftville, CT, died peacefully on May 20, in the company of her children at the Alzheimer's Resource Center in Plantsville CT. The daughter of the late Wilfred and Anysie (Pare') Fontaine she was the beloved wife for 49 years of John (Jack) F. Kelly, who predeceased her in 1996. Agnes and Jack were communicants of Sacred Heart Church throughout their lives and were active members of community organizations in Taftville. Agnes is much loved as mother and grand-mother, and as an aunt, mentor and friend to many family and community members. She was known for her faith, her kindness and her love of music.
After raising her family, Agnes entered the field of education, working as an educational assistant in Norwich, CT and with Project LEARN, in East Lyme. She also tutored reading at Sacred Heart School in Taftville and taught religious education at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford. She was part of the Norwich Diocese Ministry to the Deaf with Fr. James Carini and Sr. Esther Cockburn and as part of that ministry formed a "Sign Language Choir" which took part in regular Masses for the Deaf in Eastern Connecticut. Her legacy to Taftville includes the formation of an AA 11th Step Meeting, which continues to take place weekly using space in Sacred Heart School.
She is survived by her brother, Julian and Constance (Norman) Fontaine, of Lisbon, her sisters-in-law Patricia (Kelly) Osten of Norwich and Maureen (Godere) Kelly of Massachusetts and by her 8 children, Kevin Kelly (Deborah Light) of Niantic; Sheila (John) Spilka of Hamden; Maureen (Daniel) Chaput of Washington, DC; Christine (Carl) Morello of Clovis, CA; Colleen (Marc) Dupont of Hamden; Patrick (Penny Lee Budz) Kelly of Bristol; Eileen (Joseph) Telgarsky of Lisbon; and Sean Kelly of Southington. She was the proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren: Quinn Kelly, Peter Spilka, Erin (Spilka) Roman, Colleen (Spilka) Wishall, Matthew Spilka, Emma Chaput, Owen Chaput, Isaac Chaput, Jenni Morello, Nathan Morello, Jacob Morello, Terrence Dupont, Katherine Kelly, and Meaghan (Shork) Boucher, along with 9 great-grandchildren.
Agnes married George I. Chaput of Norwich in 2000. They were loving companions until his death in 2009. George is survived by George W. Chaput (Carol) of Norwich, David Chaput (Paige Watkins) of Virginia, Jerry Payne of St. Michael’s MD, Barry Payne (Sally) of Peoria, IL and Rachel Payne of Arnold, MD.
Funeral arrangements are being overseen by Godere Funeral Home in Taftville. A wake will be held on Tuesday, May 24 from 5 - 7 at the funeral home at 21 N 2nd Avenue in Taftville; a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church (Taftville) on Wednesday, May 25 at 11:00 AM, followed by a committal service at St. Joseph Cemetery in Greenville, CT.
