Obituary for Jeannette “Jan” Hadam
Jeannette Irene (Bourdon) Hadam passed away peacefully at UCONN Health, John Dempsey Hospital on February 9th, 2021 after fighting a courageous battle with Covid-19. She was born in Norwich on April 27th, 1938 to Irene (Blais) of Taftville and Roland (Babe) Bourdon of Quebec, Canada who both predeceased her. Jeannette (Jan) grew up in the village of Taftville and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. She enjoyed her childhood in Taftville with her many cousins and relatives who also lived in the village. She spent most of her adult life living in Taftville and lived most recently at Sheltering Arms in Norwich. On October 14th, 1960 Jan married Charles G. Hadam at Sacred Heart Church in Taftville and they remained a faithful couple for 46 years until his passing from cancer in 2006. Jan leaves behind her three children, William and his wife Shauna (Roberts) of Taftville, Tricia (Lewon) and her husband Tom of Norwich, and Joan (Montgomery) and her husband Tom of Norwich. In addition, she leaves behind her grandchildren Michael and his wife Emma (Allen) Lewon, Carolyn Lewon and her fiancé Matthew Belmont, Sarah (Varner) Hadam and her husband Seth, William Hadam Jr., Melissa Runnels, and Christopher, Geoffery and Gretchen Montgomery as well as her great-grandchildren Victor Restino, Jackson Hadam, Beau Varner and Savannah Meredith. She also leaves behind her brother, Roland Bourdon of Lisbon, her nephew Robert Bourdon and his wife Jill (Lagasse), and niece Jodi Bourdon. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Simone (Smith) Bourdon, who recently passed away on January 11th, 2021. Jan attended Sacred Heart School in Taftville and moved on to graduate from The Norwich Free Academy, class of ‘56. She was part of a group that was honored as 50 year graduates in 2006.
Jan began her work career as a secretary for the Thermos Company in Norwich but mostly was a stay-at-home mom for her children. She was active with the Taftville Little League concession stand, attending school plays, and trips back and forth to dance classes and recitals. As her children grew older she worked part time at the deli counter at Cleo’s Market in Taftville and once the nest was empty she worked behind the counter at Arremony’s Bakery in Jewett City, where she was a fixture with the locals who visited the shop daily and became affectionately known to her grandchildren as “Momma Donut”. Before “retiring” from the work force she volunteered at the William W. Backus Hospital as a patient advocate where she absolutely loved to spend time talking and interacting with the patients there. Jan loved her summers with the family at Lord’s Point in Stonington where she spent time fishing, taking a casual stroll with friends or just relaxing on the beach. She is a lifetime member of the Mystic Aquarium and enjoyed taking the family to the shows with “Sassy” the dolphin and the California Sea Lions. She was also an avid New York Yankees fan having attended several Yankee home games to root on the “Boys in Pinstripes”. Jan was a very personable, sociable and fashionable person who loved to chat with anyone and everyone she met, and always kept her fellow residents entertained at Sheltering Arms. Of late she enjoyed going out on shopping trips to Walmart or out for a casual lunch to “catch up” with her children and grandchildren. The family would like to express their sincerest thanks to the staff at Sheltering Arms, who made her feel at home, and to the staff at the UCONN Health, who provided care that is second to none. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 10am at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Norwich. Burial to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Greenville. Please observe Covid-19 protocols with social distancing and masks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
