Obituary for John F. Legato
John (Jack) Francis Legato
Age 82, a long time resident of Salem, CT and recent resident of Colchester died peacefully at Harrington Court on Dec 8th, 2019 with his children by his side. He was born in Hoboken, NJ, the 2nd child of Dr. Sam Legato and Emma (Connolly) Legato on July 10th, 1937.
He was a good man, a loving husband to his wife Kathryn (Radigan) for 58 years, a devoted father to his children, Christine Luhman (Paul), John Legato (Denise) and Michael Legato (Lisa). A grandfather to Jennifer Luhman, Jonathan Legato, and Brian Legato, and great grandfather to Madeline Luhman. A faithful friend to all who knew him, he leaves behind his older sister Dr. Marianne Legato of New York City, NY, two younger brothers, Robert (Claudia) of Tuscon, AZ, and Gerard (Marilyn) of Gillette, NJ, cousins Jeannie Dexheimer, Kathleen Surak, Kevin Connolly, Francis Legato, and Virginia Legato. He was predeceased by his sisters Margaret Bello and Joanne Churchman.
Jack attended high school at Stevens Academy in Hoboken, NJ, and Parks College a part of St. Louis University, graduating in 1959. He later earned a masters degree in business from the University of Connecticut in 1976.
He had a lifelong love of aviation and airplanes. His first professional job was with Curtis-Wright in NJ. He ended his career at UNC Aerospace in East Lyme, CT.
Upon retirement he spent his time working in his workshop building furniture for his family and gifts for his friends. He also enjoyed working on his 1940 Buick, a replica of the first car he had as a teenager.
He loved sweet desserts, including cherry pie and his wife's delicious New York style cheese cake, which he insisted on having every birthday and holiday.
His favorite place to spend a summer day was the New Jersey shore, riding the waves. He passed this love on to all of his children and even convinced his mid-western son-in-law that it's the best place to be.
