Obituary for Mary Jane D'Elia
Taftville - Mary Jane (Desmond) D'Elia passed away at her home August 19, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was born in Norwich September 17, 1929 the daughter of Leonard J. Desmond and Angela F. Kelly. Mary Jane was a graduate of St. Patrick's School and Norwich Free Academy Class of 1947. Her love of music, with a special interest in piano led her to the Hart School of Music where she studied for several years. Mary Jane began her work career at the U.S. Submarine Base where she met the love of her life. In June 1955 she was united in marriage to John Anthony D'Elia and resided in New London. Sadly 3 years later, her husband died suddenly and Mary Jane returned to Norwich to raise her 3 children. Later in life she returned to the work force, working for the State of CT at the former Norwich Hospital, retiring after 15 years in the clerical field. Mary Jane's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were a source of great pride for her. She cherished her strong bond with her sisters Frances and Kathleen, and some of her favorite memories were of travels with her sisters. Mary Jane had a wide circle of friends and enjoyed monthly get togethers with them. She loved to play piano, and loved her classical and Irish music. Mary Jane will be remembered for her love of family and strong faith. She is survived by her daughter Catherine (Mustafa) Macca, her son Leonard (Renee) D'Elia, her sister Frances Campbell, 7 grandchildren Thomas, Matthew, John, James, Connor, Marc and Laura, 3 great grandchildren Justin, Samuel and Jack, her daughter in law Karen D'Elia, brothers in law Vincent Hogan, Andrew (Anna Mae) D'Elia, Joseph (Joan) D'Elia, her sisters in law Mary McBride and Mary Gordon, plus many nieces and nephews. Mary Jane was predeceased by her son John D'Elia, her brother Leonard Desmond and her sister Kathleen Hogan. All are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church Taftville Thursday at 10:00 am meeting directly at Church. Burial to follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at Godere Funeral Home 21 North 2nd Ave. Taftville are Wednesday 5-7 pm. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church Memorial Fund PO Box 208 Taftville, CT 06380.
