Obituary for Nicholas Saltojanes
Nicholas Saltojanes, 92, died peacefully February 22, 2021. Anyone who didn’t call this kind and gentle man “Nick” knew him as “Papou” — a fun Greek grandpa who loved his family deeply and taught all near to him to love the simple things in life. Nick was born November 20, 1928, in Norwich, CT, the fifth child of James and Katherine Saltojanes. He was pre-deceased by his parents and siblings: Louise Arabolis, Mary Warner, Irene Williamson, and Peter Saltojanes. Nick graduated from Norwich Free Academy and served in the U.S. Army. Nick was a carpenter by trade and inclination. He built houses in Norwich with Ted Lambert for many years. “The man who could fix anything,” people said — without exaggeration. He put his mechanical and building talents to good use over the decades, and he loved creating solutions for any issue — mechanical, electrical, plumbing or his kids’ school projects. On February 23, 1957, he married Irene Beauregard, at Sacred Heart Church in Taftville. Nick and Irene raised four children on the family’s poultry farm, good-naturedly teaching them the value of hard work, and relaxation that could be its reward. As the poultry business winded down, Nick turned his talents to the family’s other growing business: Oakland Heights mobile home community where he operated big machinery, fixed things, and passed his mechanical abilities and resourcefulness onto his children. Nick enjoyed camping with his siblings and their families, gardening, taking care of horses, and watching endless hours of sports on TV. He was the heart of family gatherings, and loved good Greek food, red wine, a little ouzo — and, OK, the occasional Bud Light, too. In addition to his wife, Irene, Nick leaves four children: Linda (and her husband, Don Everett) of Lisbon; Nancy (and her husband, Keith Fontaine) of Norwich; Nicholas “Jim” (and his wife, Lori) of Canterbury; and Denise (and her husband, Dr. Stephen Spiegelberg) of Winchester, MA. He was very proud of his four grandchildren: Melissa (and her husband, Kevin Kohler) of Canterbury; Justin Saltojanes of Canterbury, Emma Fontaine of Brooklyn, NY; and Nick Fontaine of Burlington, VT. Also, one great-granddaughter, Amber Kohler. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Norwich, CT, Norwich Free Academy, or the charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Godere Funeral Home in Taftville. Due to COVID, burial will be private. Nick’s life will be celebrated at a later date.
