December 9, 1924-December 18, 2016
Mrs. Theresa (Tweedy) (Sylvestre) Lavoie, of Norwich, passed away peacefully Sunday morning at Backus Hospital. She was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, December 9, 1924, the daughter of Andre and Anna (Trudeau) Sylvestre. A resident of the Taftville and Norwich area most of her life, Tweedy was proud of her work history which included years at Ponema Mills during World War II era, weaving ribbon at Lord’s Manufacturing Co., working at McKenna’s Florist and Simone’s Flower Shop, and, in her later years, until the age of 75, cleaning houses for local folks. She loved to tell of her day’s adventures at the dinner table every night. She always told her captivating stories in such an animated way, leaving us laughing, hanging on every detail. Despite always being a laborer, she had a wonderful dinner on the table promptly at 5pm every night. Her simple French dishes continue, even today, to be favorites among family and friends. Such treats as her Chinese Pudding(which really was a delectable Shepherds Pie), her “Crummy Beef Stew”,( which once had to be carried, in a Cool Whip container, on a plane to Nebraska so that it could be shared with her grandson), her Thanksgiving meat stuffing and her Deep Dish Apple Pie are just a few of her creations that will continue to be passed down through the generations.
Mom(or Meme, as she was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren) was loved and cherished by so many people. Everyone who knew her, loved her. She was smart, feisty and had a heart that just couldn’t do enough for everyone who had touched her own heart. Although she stood only 4 feet, 9 inches tall, when Tweedy entered a room, she was as big as life. She was a devoted Red Sox fan. Her hobbies over the years included reading, sewing, cake decorating, traveling cross country, fishing, doing “word searches”, but what she loved most of all was going to Bingo. Especially in recent years, after the 2012 passing of her husband to whom she had been married for 69 years, her passion was not just playing Bingo, but spending time every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with all of her Bingo buddies. When she returned home after playing, she talked non-stop, describing every detail of her night: who had won, who hadn’t, who was set, whose seat someone had taken, how good her egg and cheese was. Just this past Wednesday evening, she had gone to Gales Ferry Bingo and said “To fill the card I needed G 47.” On Thursday morning she was still talking about how she needed G 47 to fill the card.
Tweedy married the love of her life, William J. Lavoie Sr, in 1942 when she was 17 years old, and he was 19 years old. “Billy” predeceased her in 2012. Tweedy is survived by 3 children: Susan Lavoie McElaney(James), of Norwich(with whom Tweedy made her home for the past 3 years); William J. Lavoie Jr(Terri) of Florida; and Michael E. Lavoie of Norwich. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Michael Doyle Jr, Brian Doyle, Kristin Haggan, Christopher Lavoie(Toni), Todd Lavoie(Nichole), Timmy Straus, Michael J. Lavoie; and 9 great-grandchildren: Brendon, Bryce and Olivia Doyle; Karis and Grady Haggan; Kalli and Cole Lavoie; Charlie Straus; Mattie Lavoie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, Tweedy was predeceased by one sister, Laurette Wojcik and one brother, Rene Sylvestre.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 70 Central Ave., Norwich on Wednesday at 10:00 AM, meeting directly at church. Burial to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Calling hours at Godere Funeral Home, 21 North 2nd Ave., Taftville are TODAY(Tuesday), 4-7PM.
